Outlook 2016 / 2019 / 365 Update for March 2021

A new rollup update has been made available for all Click-to-Run installations of Outlook 2016, Outlook 2019 and Outlook as part of a Microsoft 365 subscription.

It contains 7 security updates for Excel (3), PowerPoint (1), Visio (1) and Office (2).

In addition, it contains 1 documented non-security fixes for Outlook Current Version 2102, 7 fixes for Monthly Enterprise Version 2101, and 7 new features and 33 fixes for a completely new Semi-Annual (Preview) Version 2102. Most notable fixes are;

  • Version 2102
    We fixed an issue that caused users to see newly added calendars fail to appear in the navigation pane until after Outlook had been restarted.
  • Version 2101
    We fixed an issue that caused the encryption icon to fail to display on emails sent using the encryption only option.
  • Version 2101
    We fixed an issue that caused issues with displaying the correct default signature in OWA.
  • Version 2101
    We fixed an issue that caused Cloud Settings users to experience a hang when updating settings.
  • Version 2101
    We fixed an issue that caused some users to experience Outlook to close unexpectedly in certain search scenarios.

Some of the new features in Semi-Annual (Preview) Version 2102 are;

  • Help protect data in your group
    The Sensitivity label you choose when creating a group is applied to group email, documents, and team sites.
  • Create polls in Outlook with Quick Poll
    Easily create a poll, collect votes, and view results within an email.
  • New room finder
    Search for conference rooms by different capabilities.
  • Quickly reopen items from previous Outlook session
    We added an option to quickly reopen items from a previous Outlook session.

    This feature is on by default. To turn it off, go to Options > General > Start up Options.

Exchange 2019, 2016 , 2013 and 2010 Security Updates for March 2021

Out-of-Band security updates have been released for Exchange 2019, Exchange 2016, Exchange 2013 and even Exchange 2010 (which has been out of support since October 13, 2020).

The reason for this is because multiple zero-day vulnerabilities exist which are currently being exploited by a nation-state affiliated group.

It is recommended that you start patching immediately beginning with server that are accessible from the Internet (like server publishing Outlook on the Web/OWA and ECP).

Outlook for Microsoft 365 Apps Feature Update for February 2021

Microsoft released the February feature update of Outlook for Microsoft 365 Apps in the Current Channel (previously known as the Office 365 Monthly Channel).

It comes with 2 new features for Outlook and 5 highlighted fixes. The new features and fixes are listed below;

  • Updated Contacts list view
    Contacts list now shows email addresses and updated photo and text size.
  • Break the language barrier with a built-in translator
    Add-ins for translation aren’t required anymore! In a message, right-click to translate specific words, phrases, or the whole message.
  • We fixed an issue that caused users of the Shared Calendar improvements to be unable to set a calendar’s color to yellow or brown.
  • We fixed and issue that caused users to see duplicate calendar groups appearing after creating a new group.
  • We fixed an issue that caused some users to experience the app to shut down when closing message windows.
  • We fixed an issue that caused users to see signatures containing Unicode content to get damaged.
  • We fixed an issue that caused users of inline translation to be unable to submit feedback.

In addition, it contains 3 documented non-security fixes for Outlook Current Version 2101, 5 features and 4 fixes for Monthly Enterprise Version 2012, and 1 fix for Semi-Annual Version 2008. Most notable fixes are;

    We fixed an issue that caused Cloud Settings users to experience a hang when updating settings.

  • Every meeting online
    Update your calendar settings to make every meeting you create a Teams Meeting by default so you no longer need to remember to click the Teams Meeting option.
    File-> Options-> Calendar-> Add online meeting to all meetings
    Note: This feature requires an update to Teams which is not yet publicly available.
  • Sensitivity label audit logging
    When users apply, change, or remove sensitivity labels on their documents and emails, that information is now made available to administrators in the Microsoft 365 audit logs. 
  • Government customers: Apply sensitivity labels to your documents and emails
    Sensitivity labeling features are now available for customers in the GCC and GCC-H environments.

Check sending account address before sending email

Select Sending Account buttonNowadays, it is quite likely that you have multiple email accounts configured in Outlook.

Especially when working from home, you don’t want to end up sending your business emails via your private account or vice versa.

Also, when you have access to a Shared Mailbox or are a delegate for the mailbox of a colleague, you could find yourself inadvertently send from these mailboxes or forget to select it when needed.

By adding this simple VBA macro to Outlook, you can prevent sending emails from the wrong email address.

Outlook for Microsoft 365 Apps Feature Update for January 2021

Microsoft released the January feature update of Outlook for Microsoft 365 Apps in the Current Channel (previously known as the Office 365 Monthly Channel).

It comes with 5 new features for Outlook and 2 highlighted fixes. The new features and fixes are listed below;

  • Delete conversation by message owner
    This feature allows you to delete a conversation by message owner.
  • Build in time between back-to-back meetings
    Give attendees time to catch their breath or travel between locations by setting meetings to start 5-10 min late by default. File-> Options-> Calendar-> Shorten appointments and meetings
  • Every meeting online
    Update your calendar settings to make every meeting you create a Teams Meeting by default so you no longer need to remember to click the Teams Meeting option.
  • Send audit data about sensitivity labeling to M365 administrators
    When users apply, change, or remove sensitivity labels on their documents and emails, Office will send up audit data to the M365 audit backend for administrators to see. This is a silent functionality (no UI) for administrator benefit.
  • Government customers: Apply sensitivity labels to your documents and emails
    Sensitivity labeling features are now available for customers in the GCC and GCC-H environments.
  • We fixed an issue that caused some users to experience Outlook to close unexpectedly in certain search scenarios.
  • We fixed an issue that caused users that have Shared or Delegated Mailboxes with large hierarchies in their profile to encounter hangs.
