Pst-file format specifications will be opened up
The Interoperability team at Microsoft announced that it will open up the pst-file format specifications to the public under the Open Specification Promise (OSP) license. This means that other developers would be free to use the pst-file format in their solutions and read/write to it without any restrictions. Currently it requires Outlook to be installed and using the Messaging API (MAPI) or the Outlook Object Model (OOM).
The documentation is still in the early development stages and the final version of the documentation is expected to be released in the first half of 2010.

Moving the ost-file of an Exchange, Outlook.com or IMAP account
Changing the location of the ost-file of an Exchange, Outlook.com or IMAP account is a bit more troublesome than moving a regular pst-file. Especially with a relatively small and expensive SSD drive, its default location might not be preferred. Learn how to move it either via a Registry value or by means of a Symbolic Link.

Microsoft has released 2 tools under an open source license. These 2 tools will allow developers to edit an pst-file without the need for Outlook to be installed on a machine or even for the machine to be running Windows.
