Outlook can’t connect to Gmail: Password incorrect

Gmail buttonWhen configuring your Gmail account in Outlook (or other mail clients such as Thunderbird and Mail apps on (older) smartphones), you may run into continuous password prompts or sync errors.

This is because Google has turned off Basic Authentication (which they refer to as Less Secure App Access) for all accounts since May 30, 2022. It now only lets you authenticate via the OAuth 2.0 standard.

As a result, you’ll get Send/Receive errors (0x800CCC0E) and could get prompted for your Gmail password again in Outlook and the login could fail even when you supply the correct password.

Updated: Script to schedule your pst-file back-up

News

I’ve completely rewritten the script to quickly create backups of your pst-file(s). The script is easy to configure and no coding skills are required to use it.

The script will gracefully close Outlook when it is running to create proper backups. You can configure it with as much pst-files as you need and backing up to an external USB-drive or network share it supported as well.

Optionally, you can keep a backup archive and have the script start Outlook again once it is done so it almost goes unnoticed when you’ve scheduled it.

Step-by-step instructions are included for configuring the script and how to create a Scheduled Task for it so you can just “set it and forget it”.

Outlook 2013 Hotfix for June 2014

News

This hotfix contains 6 fixes for specific issues which haven’t yet been included in the most current Rollup Update. Most notable fixes are:

  • The Status Bar shows “Disconnected” even though all connections are established.
  • Assume that you use a non-Exchange account, and you have multiple calendar, contacts, or task folders. After you install SP1, when you open or create a calendar, contacts, or task item, there is no “In Folder” or “In Shared Folder” line at the bottom of the item.
  • You create a calendar item for an Outlook.com account, and you set the Reminder to None. In this situation, Outlook.com does not recognize the None setting, and it still creates a Reminder of 15 minutes.
