Outlook 2013 Update for January 2014

News

An update has been released for Outlook 2013 and can be downloaded and installed manually, but is also being offered via Microsoft Update and updated automatically for Office 365 installations.

This is actually the same update that was already released in December but missed the Patch Tuesday deadline of December and thus was not yet available via Microsoft Update nor available for Office 365 installations; It is now.

Update KB2850061 for Outlook 2013
This is a general stability and performance improvement update but also includes fixes for 2 issues that were introduced in the November Security Update:

  • Autodiscover fails for Exchange 2007 configurations.

14 Outlook Search feature requests for 2014

News

Outlook Search buttonOn a personal note, I don’t have much issues with the Search feature in Outlook and I use it quite often. I have a very large mailbox and quite a flat folder structure.

You could say I’m a “piler” and not a “filer” so without understanding how the Search feature works, it could indeed be difficult to find back something.

Luckily I’m an Outlook MVP and I’m pretty well versed in Outlook’s Search Query language but I’m fully aware that this is not for every one.

While I don’t feel that Outlook Search is “broken”, I do believe that there is lots of room for improvement to make Search more powerful and intuitive.

So, to kick of the year, I’ve compiled a list of feature requests regarding Search in Outlook. As 2014 is the year that a lot of work is being done for Outlook 16 (Outlook 2016?), we might already see which feature requests got implemented in sneak reviews or even a BETA by the end of 2014.

Completing your Christmas and New Year’s preparations

News

Christmas is here Santa

Have you completed your final Holiday preparations already? Well, at least Outlook wise?

If you have been following this site for a while already, you know already that Outlook can be a great help with sending out your Christmas cards by using the instructions from our Christmas Guide.

You don’t necessarily have to use Outlook to send out your Christmas cards or New Year’s party invitations via email. You can also use it to print actual envelopes or just to keep track of who to send a card when you prefer to do it by hard. (see the Christmas guide to learn how to use Categories for this).

When using an on-line service to send out your cards or invitations, you can often load the names and address from an Excel sheet or csv-file which you can quickly create from your Outlook’s Contacts list.

And when work is done, don’t forget to set your Out of Office or Vacation message and check your Calendar to see if all Holiday’s for next year have been added already!
