With all the changes that came with the transformation of Hotmail to Outlook.com and the Live ID becoming a Microsoft Account, this guide wasn’t just up for a renaming but for a major rewrite!

The process for configuring Outlook.com to use your own address has been simplified a bit and wasn’t just a paintjob. For instance, the addition of detecting the SMTP server for your domain allows you to actually send out with your own address as well instead of “on behalf of” even when this is for instance a Gmail address.

Nevertheless, there are quite some pitfalls but this updated guide walks you through the entire process; from signing up to migrating over your data.

Create a Contact Group from selected Contacts

Add Member to Contact Group buttonWhen you create a new Contact Group (also known as a Distribution List), Outlook doesn’t offer you much flexibility when it comes to finding and selecting contacts via the “Add Members” dialog.

For instance, there is no way to quickly add several people belonging to the same company or Category to your Contact Group.

The VBA macro from this article allows you to select your members directly from your Contacts folder. This enables you to first sort or filter your Contacts folder by a specific field such by Company or Category and/or do a search query and thus select your contact group members more conveniently.

This hotfix contains a fix for an issue where the “Show a room list” dialog box isn’t shown and the “Play on Phone” feature doesn’t work when Exchange 2013 has been set up without an external ECP (Enhanced Capability Port) URL.

Hotfix KB2768352 for Outlook 2013
This hotfix corrects an issue where the CTRL+ALT+Q shortcut doesn’t produce the @ sign in the German version of Outlook 2013 on a German version of Windows 7 or Windows 8 configured with a German keyboard layout.

Outlook 2010 Hotfix for April 2013

Hotfix KB2791026 for Outlook 2010
This hotfix contains the following 2 fixes;

  • After you create a new folder in the Inbox in Outlook 2010, the new folder is not selected.
  • When you run the “Publish to GAL” function in Outlook 2010 and then send an encrypted message, recipients cannot open the encrypted message.

Outlook 2013 Update for April 2013

An update has been released for Outlook 2013 and can be downloaded and installed manually, but is also being offered via Microsoft Update.

Update KB2738013 for Outlook 2013
This is a non-security update which solves 3 issues all related to Outlook.com accounts.

  • The content of Outlook items may not be displayed correctly when composing them with anything other than UTF-8 encoding. This update also requires update KB2768007 for Word 2013 to be installed.
  • Mail items may appear as duplicates in Outlook. Deleting the duplicate in Outlook will however also delete the original on Outlook.com.
  • Email messages that contain non-ASCII characters are not displayed correctly.
